MY CEDAR WOOD FRAMES

I have recently begun hand-making frames using cedar boards and treating them in the “Shou Sugi Ban” or “Yakisugi” style (depending on translation.) This is an ancient Japanese architectural technique that preserved wood by charring the surface with a hot flame, therefore protecting home siding against insects, fire and moisture before treated wood and staining were available. The frames are finished with Tung Oil to seal the wood and to keep the charred surface from rubbing off. I believe this process best enhances the texture and mood of the images I create. At the moment I’m concentrating on three finishes: a deep black crackle, a clean black with very little crackle, and a rustic brown which reveals the grain and light tones of the wood. But, I am in the process of developing other styles that are more complex and involved.

I’m using these frames now exclusively in shows and exhibitions. They will be available on a custom order basis only. Please email me to discuss sizes and pricing.
